"All I Wanted To Say Was" (AIWTSW) marks another collaborative venture between Julie, Bomin, and myself following our work on "Underwear." Similar to Bomin, Julie has a penchant for drawing stories from personal experiences, striving to portray them with a heightened sense of realism. Upon reading the script, my initial reaction was its profound authenticity. As foreigners and first-generation immigrants striving in New York, we are constantly reevaluating our choices. Our parents ponder whether this struggle is genuinely worthwhile—does New York justify the sacrifice of leaving behind a comparatively comfortable life in our homelands? Within this cultural and generational chasm, stark differences in perspectives and conflicts emerge, particularly within East Asian families where communication has always been a significant challenge. Perhaps it is only when our parents witness our hardships firsthand that they realize we, too, have grown up.
